RSGB Club Calls Contest (1.8MHz AFS)

The aim of this event is to encourage contacts between Affiliated Societies, to give their callsigns an airing, and to provide a contest on 160m for those who wish to participate in the AFS Super League.

Many clubs use this contest to as a way of encouraging new licensees to operate under appropriate supervision. Those who are participating more competitively are asked to be patient with newcomers, who may not be as experienced in contesting.

Please note that this is a contest where clubs are encouraged to use special club prefixes -- see Rule 4. It is advantageous to do so, because it attracts callers who can immediately recognise that you provide a high-value bonus.

Entrants should take careful note of the power limits in the part of 160m used for the contest. The Contest Committee will be monitoring for signals which appear to be unreasonably loud.

    1. Basic Information

    Date: Saturday 9th November 2013.
    Time: 2000 - 2300 UTC.
Frequencies: 1870-1990 kHz. Entrants must keep their "carrier" (dial) frequency above 1872kHz
    Mode: SSB.
    Contest exchange: see Rule 5.

The General Rules apply to this contest

    2. Sections

Section (a). Any Society which is affiliated to the RSGB may enter, and in accordance with Rule 4, nominates stations as Club Stations and Club Members. Operators of these stations need not be members of the RSGB, but must be members of the Society they represent. Affiliated Societies which enter this Section, and who use a Club Callsign will qualify for the AFS Super League 2013-14, and their scores will be consolidated into the overall AFS Super League tables.

Section (b). Any group of RSGB members may form a club for the purposes of this contest, and in accordance with Rule 4, may nominate stations as Club Stations and Club Members. Clubs entering in this Section will not be included in the AFS Super League. Clubs are advised to enter under Section (a) if they are able to, so as to be shown in the AFS Super League table.

    3. Teams and locations

Teams represent a Society or Club. A Team consists of one to four stations, and each Society or Club may enter one or more Teams. The Teams will be designated (for example) Anytown Radio Society Team A, Anytown Radio Society B, and so on. The adjudication software will allocate the four highest scoring stations to "Team A", the second highest scoring to "Team B", etc.

All stations must be located within a radius of 50 miles of the normal meeting-place of the Society or Club, and must be within the UK. Where a Society entering Section (a) has branches, e.g. RNARS, or where it is geographically spread out, it may define separate branch meeting-places, and stations representing each branch will be considered to be separate from those entered by other branches, except in respect of RSGB affiliation.

The RSGB Contest Committee verifies that membership and distance rules are being complied with. Therefore the address, including postcode or QTH locator of the normal meeting place of each Club or Society (and any of its Branches) must be emailed to afs.query@rsgbcc.org. This only needs to be done once for each Club or Society, after which the information will be kept on file. The currently held address information can viewed and verified during log submission. Additions to the robot club names list or changes to the Club or Society meeting place data should also be emailed to afs.query@rsgbcc.org

    4. Entrants

Stations may be single or multioperator, but no station or operator may represent more than one Society, Club or Branch.

Societies participating in Section (a) must put on the air a station using the callsign allocated by the licensing authority for its use. This station is known as the "Club Station", and it may if it wishes use the appropriate club prefix (GX, GC, GT, GN, GH, GS, or GP). It is advantageous to do so, because it attracts callers who can immediately recognise the higher bonus associated with a Club Station. Please note that it is not considered to be in the spirit of the contest for a Club Member to make contact mainly with its own Club Station.

A Society or Club may define several Club Stations if it has several club callsigns available, but each Team may only contain one Club Station.

Other stations representing the Society or Club are designated "Club Members". Club Stations and the Club Members all contribute to Team scores, and must all comply with the 50 mile and UK limits described in Rule 3.

    5. Exchange and Logging

    The contest exchange is:
    Report
    Serial Number
"Club Station", "Club Member" or "No Club", plus a 4-letter club abbreviation

Name of Club may be sent in full if desired, but must also be sent and logged as a four-letter abbreviation. These abbreviations are shown below. Societies and Clubs who are not in this list must no later than one week before the contest. Contacts made with stations who are not entering the contest, or with non-UK stations, must be logged as "No Club".

Contacts made with a Club Station or Member who does not know his abbreviation should be logged as usual, but with an abbreviation such as XXXX. Then note the circumstances and club involved in the "Soapbox" section of the log, and the adjudicator will make any adjustments necessary. Entrants should also be aware of the possibility that a station contacted has a club abbreviation not listed in these rules, but should in any case log the abbreviation normally.

Programs known to the Contest Committee which can log this contest and create a suitable Cabrillo file are

    SD by EI5DI
    N1MM Contest Logging Software
    SkookumLogger for Mac OS X

Other logging software which does not support this contest might also be used if the RSGB or EU Sprint format is supported. Entrants should use the "name" field to hold, for example, CMARIE (Club Member, Ariel Radio Group) or CSCCAM (Club Station, Contest Cambria). Then the log must be converted to correct Cabrillo format after the contest with software such as a text editor. Please note that logs which are not converted appropriately will be rejected by the Robot which uploads logs to the Contest Committee web site.

    6. Scoring and results

The scoring is 3 points per contact, plus a bonus of 5 points for each contact with a Club Member, and 25 points for each contact with a Club Station. The RSGB Headquarters Station (GB3HQ or other GB callsign) may be in operation during the contest -- its entry will be treated as a checklog. Contacts with this station are logged as Club Station with club abbreviation RSGB, and will score a 50 point bonus.

A table of entrants' results will be published, together with a table of Society and Club Team results. The highest scoring Team for each Society entering Section (a) will have the results normalised and entered into the AFS Super League.

    7. Awards

The Ariel Trophy is awarded to the operators of the leading station in the individual tabulation.
The David Hill, G4IQM, Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Society entering Section (a) with the highest score in the table of Society and Club Team results.
Certificates are awarded to the three leading Club Stations and three leading Club Members.

    8. Logs

Online entries must be submitted to http://www.rsgbcc.org/cgi-bin/hfenter.pl by the date specified in the General Rules. Clubs or Groups whose name is not contained in the list offered by the entry robot should omit this information and enter it later in the entry process.
Entries must be in Cabrillo format
Example of Club Calls Contest log.
