50MHz Trophy Contest

The amount of fun you can have in this contest is very much determined by the Es gods hence it's position in the calendar close to the longest day when Es might be assumed to be more likely. So what happened ? Opinions were varied M0DX 'Reasonable Es to east Eu on Sat until about 9pm. Then flat Sun am then Es returned before the end of the contest. Very busy with continental stations.' G4YPC 'Very good SpE. Great fun'. And from M1B '23cms would have been more fun'. Last word to G4HGI 'bit like an inside out sandwich'. And no, I don't know what he means either.

Outside of Es activity was judged poor. From GM4V '11 G (24 UK in total) stations worked in 5 hours is the worst we've seen in all our years contesting. A quick check on FT8 showed good activity before and during the contest, with many recognisable calls. Have we reached the point where many OM's can't be bothered to op SSB/CW any more?'

For this years edition VHFCC changed the scoring system from mults to it's preferred bonus system. At the time VHFCC took the view that this change was part of a longer term move from mults to bonus contests and would help reduce runaway scores.

This change had been the subject of adverse comment on social media but Tim G8X (G4FJK) summed it up in his comments 'This contest used to have multipliers which motivated stations to work hard to make QSOs from rare squares and search for the DX. There would be a BUZZ when a new mult was found. The 200 bonus does nothing when the average pts/Q is 1000+. The mults should be reinstated for 2027'. Could the issue Tim highlights in his comments be removed by increasing the bonus from 200 to 500 ? Comments to VHFCC please.

There were 91 entries (105 entries in 2025, 122 entries in 2024). Is the reduction in the number of entrants a product of this change ? It was for your Adjudicator.

It's no change this year in the Trophy Department - Blacksheep Contest and DX Group (G8T) (G8TIC, G0XDI, M0MUX, G7RAU, G4LOH and M0BTZ) win the Open section and retain the Telford Trophy. Tim G8X (G4FJK) retains the Six Metre Cup as the highest scoring single operator entry.
