RSGB Contest Results 80m CC DATA 2017

The final set of results for the 80m Club Championship series being the data session of the 27th July, the winners are now revealed. The contest series has been full of the usual ups and downs associated with contesting from failing computers, high winds bringing antenna down, and plain old poor propagation all featuring in the soapboxes. Despite all the trials and tribulations that entrants faced the series is as popular as ever with 46 clubs being represented in the general section and 38 in the local section with a total of 246 stations actively participating in the Data legs, 400 in the SSB legs and 319 in the CW legs (about 540 different entrants overall).

From an adjudicator's point of view, the same mistakes in logging are made over and over. Perhaps the most common is in the data series where stations fail to note the change of mode in their log resulting in losing around 50% of their score.

Congratulations to the winners of the General section, Norfolk ARC who repeated their performance of last year with a very comfortable margin over De Montfort University ARS. They lift the Horace Freeman trophy. In the local section Cambridge and District put in a solid entry every session which resulted in them taking a well deserved 1st place rising from their 3rd place of last year. Hot on their heels is Torbay with last year's winners Horsham taking the 3rd place vacated by Cambridge. Cambridge & District ARC lift the G5RV trophy for their effort.

Before you point out that the trophies are awarded incorrectly, the Horace Freeman Trophy is now awarded to the winning team in the General category and the G5RV trophy is awarded to the winning team in the Local category.

The overall highest scoring entrant for the entire 80m CC series is Tim Raven G4ARI with 14,591 normalised points, representing De Montfort University ARS; his personal consistency is all the more remarkable because he missed one of the 18 contests. In each of his 17 events, he scored at least 75% of the highest score. Tim will receive the RSGB 80m Challenge Trophy which is being introduced this year. A surprise new Trophy for Tim and a recognition of the effort he has expended in support of his club. We hope that this trophy will be hotly contested in 2018.
