3.5MHz Autumn Series - November CW results

Long skip was the dominating propagation factor for the third and final CW event which gave those nearer the centre of UK&CD population an initial disadvantage. The skip distance did seem to shorten towards the end of the session so final scores for many were somewhat better than predicted after a very slow first half hour. However there was good support from non-UK stations with 31 entries and many more in the logs, mainly from Europe but also Asia (5B4) and North America (K and VE2/3).

Adjudication again involved checking an SDR recording of the contest to check for any transmissions by entrants in the two minutes before the start and ensuring all contacts claimed were completed before the end. A few transgressions were detected and this resulted in a penalty of five points for transmitting before the start or loss of the QSO points for completion after the end.

Thanks to Duncan G3WZD for running the bonus station G6XX, he made 50 QSOs.

This being the final event of the Series the certificates can be awarded. For the third year in a row the runner-up in the General Club category is Norfolk ARC but moving up from last year's fifth place to secure the top spot this year is Three As CG. Last year's winners De Montfort University ARS are in third place.

In the Local Club category the winner receives the Newbury Trophy and this has been firmly in the grip of the Newbury & DARS since the Autumn Series began in 2017. However, with a team of 19 members and participating as a local club this year, Bristol CG head the table and are awarded the Newbury Trophy for 2020. Newbury & DARS are the runner up with Grimsby ARS in third place.

The highest scoring individual entry for the fourth year running is David Cree G3TBK representing Grimsby ARS, not far behind and winning six of the sessions entered is Andy Cook G4PIQ batting for Three As CG. Andy is just ahead of last year's runner up Ian Trusson G3RVM. The total scores were down on last year indicating increasing competition in all the sessions, noticeably from Foundation and Intermediate Licence holders.

Overall participation in the Autumn Series continues to increase year on year, there were 462 individual entrants over the nine sessions, a 15% increase compared to 2019. Thanks for all the support from outside the UK&CD which really help to make a challenging series of events, particularly when propagation is less favourable for inter-UK contacts.
