SSB Field Day 2025

The weather in the UK for this year's Field Day was not dissimilar to last year for some, with rain, thunder, lightning and wind causing shutdowns and damage to tents.  For others it was a fine weekend showing how being prepared for the worst is a wise precaution but hopefully not needed.  However band conditions were very different to 2024, the higher bands being open for only short periods.  When it did open, 21MHz allowed some good propagation to Asia taking advantage of stations participating in the All Asia contest.  There were some short 28MHz openings mainly via sporadic E on Sunday morning but a rise in the MUF did allow a few QSOs to Africa and the Middle East around the same time.  There were no overnight openings on 14MHz but early morning before and around sunrise did see VK/ZL and Oceania stations in the logs.  Propagation to North America was reported as poor.  Some high rates were achieved on 3.5 and 7MHz by many entrants reflecting the support for the IARU Region 1 Field Day throughout Europe.

As usual logs were received from other European societies which allows more rigorous cross checking.  Incorrect copying of callsigns was the main cause of errors and loss of points and multipliers.

For the second year there was the opportunity to register your station in advance which lets others know who will be on, although I did note that several stations registered but did not take part or did not submit a log.  Was it the poor UK weather forecast for the weekend?

Congratulations to all the Trophy and certificate winners listed below.  Sadly there were no entrants in the QRP Unassisted Portable category so no takers for the G3PSH Memorial Trophy awarded to the leading UK&CD station.  A note for next year!
