2017 144 MHz UKAC - Review of the year

Despite the protests over the scoring scheme for the UKAC, the activity in the 144 MHz UKAC has continued to increase. This year the average number of entrants per session was just over 269. The number of entrants exceeded 260 in ten of the sessions, exceeded 270 in six of the sessions and peaked at 299 in the May session.

The number of locator squares active in each session varied between 47 (in February) and 66 (in July). The number of stations active in each session varied between 441 (in June) and 597 (in July). In total, 131,100 QSOs were made during the 2017 144 MHz UKAC.

The General Club Category was dominated by the 807 ARO who topped the table in all twelve sessions. GMDX were in second place with last year's winners, the Travelling Wave CG in third place. 69 Affiliated Societies competed in the General Club Category of the 2017 144 MHz UKAC.

The top spot in the Local Club Category was fought over by the Hereford ARS, Sheffield & DWS and Worksop ARS. Hereford ARS won seven of the twelve sessions and emerged in first place with Sheffield & DWS in second place and Worksop ARS in third place. 34 Affiliated Societies competed in the Local Club Category of the 2017 144 MHz UKAC.

The AO (400 Watt, unlimited antenna) section produced a battle between several stations. Three stations, G4CLA, M0DXR and G4FZN all scored more than 7,400 (out of 8,000) points. However, for the third year running, Pete G4CLA dominated this section and won eight of the twelve sessions to score 8000 points. Mark M0DXR was the runner-up with G4FZN/P (operated by Chris G4FZN and Pauline G8HQW) in third place. The leading Intermediate Licensee was Martin 2M0KAU. The leading non-UK Station was Conrad PA5Y. 104 stations entered the AO section.

The AR (100 Watt, single antenna) section witnessed a very close battle between M0VXX, M0BRA, G8PNN, GM4JTJ, G3YDY and M0GAV. All of these stations managed to score more than 7,700 points (out of 8,000). To achieve success in the UKAC, consistently high performance is required and Tristan M0VXX produced this year's winning performance for the second year running amassing 7980 points, beating the runner-up, M0BRA operated by Uri G0BBB and Graham G4DDN by 98 points. Gordon G8PNN was in third place for the second year running. Pete 2E0NEY was the leading Intermediate Licensee and the winner of the Intermediate Shield. James GM3RXF was the leading Young Operator. The leading Overseas Station was Jacques F1BHL. 346 stations entered the AR section

In the AL (10 Watt, single antenna) section, five stations scored more than 7,600 points (out of 8,000): G1YBB, G6DOD, G0EAK, G0EHV and G4HGT. The run-away winner was Steven G1YBB who scored the maximum of 8,000 points. Competition for second and third places was fierce but eventually Mark G6DOD emerged in second place with Steve G0EAK in third place. Andrew 2E0RET was the leading Intermediate Licensee. Mary M6KMB was the leading Foundation Licensee and the winner of the Foundation Shield. Lauren M6HLR was the leading Young Operator. 205 stations entered the AL section.

The first 2018 144MHz UKAC session starts at 2000 local time (2000 UTC) on Tuesday January 2nd. Just before this event is the 144MHz FM Activity Contest (FMAC) which starts at 1900 local time (1900 UTC) with a duration of 1 hour.
