2024 144MHz UKAC: Review of the year

This series of contests continues to be popular with an average number of entrants per session of 217 (257 in 2023, 262 in 2022, 302 in 2021, 322 in 2020, 256 in 2019, 270 in 2018, 269 in 2017). There were at least 189 entrants in every session this year and entries peaked at 252 in the March session.

The number of locator squares active in each session varied between 42 (January) and 73 (November). The number of stations active in each session varied between 310 (January) and 467 (July). In total, 106,494 QSOs (130,901 in 2023, 128,548 in 2022, 144,802, in 2021, 157,241 in 2020, 123,419 in 2019, 129,250 in 2018) were made during the 2024 144MHz UKAC.

The General Club category was won for the third year running by the Northern Fells CG. They topped the table in ten of the twelve sessions. In second place was the Harwell ARS. For the fifth year running, Wirral & District ARC claimed third place. Fifty-eight Affiliated Societies (54 in 2023, 74 in 2022, 64 in 2021, 80 in 2020, 70 in 2019, 79 in 2018) competed in the General Club Category.

The top spot in the Local Club category was claimed by the Parallel Lines CG pushing last year's winners, the Hereford ARS into second place. The Parallel Lines CG won all twelve sessions. Third place was claimed by the Chesham & DARS. Forty-three Affiliated Societies (43 in 2023, 34 in 2022, 41 in 2021, 34 in 2020, 34 in 2019, 32 in 2018) competed in the Local Club Category. Affiliated Societies can apply to compete in the Local Club category section if they meet the appropriate criteria. If a club wishes to change category, this must be donebefore the first UKAC session of 2025. Please see the UKAC rules for further details.

For the tenth year running, the AO (Licensed Power, unlimited antenna) section was won by Pete G4CLA who won nine of the twelve sessions, scoring 8,000 points. David GI4SNA was in the runners-up spot, 286 points behind G4CLA. Richard GD8EXI claimed third place. The leading non-UK Station for the sixth year running was Roger EI8KN, who entered all twelve sessions. Eighty stations entered the AO section (98 in 2023, 95 in 2022, 100 in 2021, 111 in 2020, 94 in 2019 and 2018).

The AR (100 Watt, single antenna) section witnessed a close battle between G4FZN, GM4JTJ, G3XDY, G3TBK, 2E0VCC, MW0LKX, and G4ODA. All of these stations managed to score more than 7700 points (out of 8000). To achieve success in the UKAC, consistently high performance is required in at least eight of the twelve sessions and Chris G4FZN (assisted by Pauline G8HQW) once again produced this year's winning performance by amassing a perfect score of 8000 points, beating the runner-up Jon GM4JTJ by 92 points. John G3XDY was in third place with a score of 7865. Darrell 2E0VCC was the leading Intermediate Station in this section. The leading Non-UK Station was Frank PE1EWR who scored 5842 points. 287 stations entered the AR section.

In the AL (10 Watt, single antenna) section, six stations scored more than 7,700 points (out of 8,000): G1YBB, G4ASR, G0EAK, G6HPR, G8OVZ, and G0FEH. The winner was Steven G1YBB who won the eleven of the twelve sessions to score the maximum of 8000 points. David G4ASR was in second place, only 160 points behind G1YBB. Steve G0EAK was in third place with 7769 points. Mark, 2E0SBM was the leading Intermediate Station with 6986 points. David M7DQO was the Leading Foundation Station with 5431 points. 119 stations entered the AL section. Oliver M7OTJ was the leading young amateur.

A certificate is also awarded for the station who provides the most stations with their best DX (ODX) on each band in the UKAC across the year. The winner of the Best DX certificate on 144MHz for 2024 is David GI4SNA who appeared in the ODX column 331 times. In second place was Jon GM4JTJ who appeared in the ODX column 237 times and in third place was Richard GD8EXI who appeared in the ODX column 211 times.

The first 2025 144MHz UKAC session starts at 2000 local time on Tuesday January 7. Just before this event is the 144MHz FM Activity Contest (FMAC) which starts at 1900 local time with a duration of 55 minutes. The entry sections for the FMAC are changing for 2025 back to power based (10W and 50W), please read the 2025 rules for further details.
