70cm UKAC - Review of 2014

The activity in the 70cm UKAC has increased this year with the number of entrants peaking at 203 in April. The number of stations active in this contest (i.e. the number of different call signs in the logs) varied between 226 in December and 354 in March.

The number of multipliers available in each session varied between 17 (in December) and 25 (in April). In total, over 61,000 QSOs were made during the 2014 70cm UKAC. The low number of multipliers and entrants in December may have been due to the bad weather in the northern half of the UK during the 70cm UKAC; many regular entrants were missing from this contest.

Two groups dominated the 70cm club section this year; The Travelling Wave Contest Group (TWCG) and the Bolton Wireless Club (BWC). Last year’s winners, TWCG were the top club in seven of the twelve sessions to retain the top spot. BWC (second place in 2013) topped the table in remaining five sessions to retain their runners-up position. Spalding & District ARS repeated their achievement of 2013 to retain third place. As in 2013, 73 clubs competed for the title of leading club in the 70cm UKAC.

The competition for top spot in the AO section was once again a battle between G4CLA, GI4SNA, GD8EXI and M0GHZ.  Pete G4CLA topped the AO table in eight sessions and hence scored an unbeatable 8000 points. David GI4SNA with two session wins and four second places gained a total of 7128 points to come second. As in 2013, Richard GD8EXI got off to a flying start in the first session of 2014 by gaining top stop but could not repeat this in the other sessions and was placed third overall.  David M0GHZ was placed fourth overall. 20 stations (23 in 2013) competed in the AO section.

The battle for top spot in the AR section was very close with only 16 points separating first and second places and 53 points separating second and third places.  Camb-Hams G3PYE (last year’s joint winner) won 1 session but scored well in the other 10 sessions they entered to gain 7897 points and to become the winners in 2014. Bob G1ZJP operating as M1MHZ (also last year’s joint winner) won 2 sessions and scored 7881 points to secure second place.  Tony G4NBS and M1DDD (operated by Nick M1DDD and Pete G0KLR) both scored 7828 points to secure joint third place. 206 stations (207 in 2013) competed in the AR section.

For the third year running, Keith G4ODA was the clear winner in the AL section by scoring 7875 points and topped the table in 2 sessions. Richard G4HGI was the runner-up scoring 7670 points and also topped the table in 2 sessions).  Simon G8OVZ came third with 7509 points. 184 stations (128 in 2013) competed in the AL section.

The AX section was once again dominated by Andy GM4JR who won 11 sessions and hence scored 8000 points. Jon GM4JTJ came second with 5800 points and Alastair G4RUL came third with 2967 points.  11 stations (also 11 in 2013) participated in the AX section.
