50MHz CW CONTEST - 25/6/17
Once again it looks as if Mr Murphy really wasn't up to speed, and allowed a little sporadic E to appear in the 50MHz CW contest. But unlike the preceding 70MHz UKAC, it was almost all at the very end of the contest rather than the beginning. Eleven out of the 41 non-UK&CD contacts (in eight countries) appear to have been made via sporadic E (all in Hungary and Italy), and over half of these were made in the last eleven minutes. Apart from the Es, this seems not to have been a vintage event. Although entries were up again this year - 26 (4 section O & 22 section SF) compared with 21 in 2016 - many entrants commented that activity was poor. Apart from the sporadic E (which many stations missed), comments on conditions varied from 'average' though to 'terrible'. Deep QSB was also a problem, although only one station complained of noise. And, in addition to being an operator down, one station had a linear fault and had to repair an antenna problem - let's hope for better luck next year!
