50MHz Trophy Contest

This contest is always made by the conditions served up by the Es gods. In 2023 the gods decided that Saturday was the day to play radio's so the reverse of 2022. Entrants choosing Sunday for their 6H entry may have come to regret their timing. But those who chose Saturday, or were were doing 24H sections, were rewarded with some good propagation on Saturday afternoon. Scores were well down on 2022 and most stations have scores less than half their 2022 total.

The weather was warm and no one mentions poor weather conditions in their comments which is unusual.

There were 112 entries (103 in 2022). The pattern of entries showed some differences with 64 UK stations choosing the 6 hour sections (73 in 2022) and 37 the 24 hour sections (23 in 2022). Particularly pleasing to see that the number of entrants in the Open Section is double that of 2022 (but still only 10 entries).

D4Z provided ODX for many stations and the overall contest ODX when G4G worked him at a distance of 4622km.

Forwarding logs to Region 1 : The Society suspended log forwarding to R1 following GDPR. At the 2022 Convention the resumption of this facility was requested. This has been implemented from this contest and entrants were asked if they wished the Adjudicator to forward their log to R1. Where requested this has been done and will be done for future contests which are co-ordinated with R1 events. The next contest this applies to will be the 70MHz Trophy Contest.

I occasionally remind entrants to READ THE RULES (sorry for shouting) before entering. There's no point in spending ages getting kit ready and setting it up if in the end you are penalised for a rules transgression. In this contest one station was awarded a substantial penalty for operating repeatedly within +/- 5KHZ of the 50.150 guard channel (General Rule 1c). Another fell foul of General Rule 1d (operators shall normally be RSGB members) and their entry was treated as a check log.

Blacksheep Contest and DX Group (G8T) (G8TIC, G7RAU, G4LOH and M0BTZ) win the Open section and retain the Telford Trophy. Tim G8X (G4FJK) regains the Six Metre Cup as the highest scoring single operator entry.
