RSGB Contest Results Overall UKAC 2023
v4.158 by G4CLA

The first UK Activity contests were started as an experiment back in 2001, initially only on 144MHz on the first Tuesday of each month. That year only 26 stations entered, but that was considered a success, and more bands were added the following year, which attracted 36 entries on 2m. It wasn't until 2004 that the club aspect was added, again initially as an experiment only in the 144MHz event, that is when the contests really started to become popular, with 11 clubs entering.  This year, logs have been received from 109 clubs and 652 entrants. To some, these events are their main radio activity during the year, to others they are just another part of their radio repertoire, and to most they are a way of joining in club/group activities.

The club league tables are split into two sections, 'Local Clubs', defined as clubs whose members all live or operate within 80km of the club's (virtual) meeting place and 'General Clubs' whose members are more widely dispersed, so all clubs can take part.

In the Local Club Section, the Parallel Lines CG made a very strong start to the year and had a maximum 6000 points in the bag by the end of January. But five-times previous champions Hereford ARS came back fighting and by April had moved into first place on 6m, 2m and 70cms. But a strong finish from PLCG saw them regain some of those losses and by the end of the year, although HARS had managed to hang on to their first place on 2m, PLCG took the lead in all the other events to claim first place overall and are awarded the Bolton Wireless Club Trophy.  Northampton RC are in third place overall for the second year running.

In the General Club Section, Northern Fells CG have once again scored a maximum 6,000 points, having finished first in all 6 events. Their dominant position at the top of the table means they retain the UKAC Club Challenge Trophy for another year. 807 ARO are in second place overall, their strong performance on the higher bands keeping them ahead of Wirral & DARC who retain their third place in the table.

In the Individual Scores table, newcomers to the top ten places this year include G6UAJ/P, who has jumped from 211th place in 2022 to fifth overall this year, congratulations to Paul on an outstanding achievement. Other new entries to the top ten since last year are Al G6HPR/P, Bernie G4HWA, Steve G1YBB and Keith G4ODA, who takes second place overall this year.  Pete G4CLA is in first place and takes home the G4DEZ Award. Darrell, 2E0VCC has retained his place at the top of the Intermediate Licensee entrants. Ben, 2E0TXQ, who first started contesting in 2021 and was the leading Foundation entry in 2022 is just behind in second place, using his new Intermediate call. There was a very close battle for third place between James 2E0OUT and Matt 2E0MDJ with James winning out by a single point. David M7DQO is this year's leading Foundation entrant, an amazing achievement on his first year of entering, David was also the leading Foundation station on 6m and 4m. Sue M6XAK is in second place this year up from fourth last year with Roger M7RMF in third spot, up from sixth in 2022.  The trophies for the Intermediate and Foundation Shields will change next year. Instead of being awarded to the Leading Intermediate and Foundation Stations in the 144MHz UKAC, they will be awarded to the Leading Intermediate and Foundation Stations Overall. The highest placed non-UK station this year is ex-pat Roger EI8KN, reaping the benefits of the improvements he has made to his station over the last 12 months. Second placed non-UK station is Frank PE1EWR, a very strong supporter of RGSB contests over many years.

The following are also worthy of mention.

  • G0SKA, the highest placed station entering only five bands
  • G6UAJ, the highest placed station entering all events portable.
  • G1YBB, who scored the maximum 1,000 points on five bands.
  • G0NZI who hasn't missed a single event for the last two years.
  • GW8ASD who remains at the top of the list of the number of entries since 2012,  see this link

Thank you to everyone who put in an entry this year, even if you only entered one log, the more stations that are active the more fun these contests are for everyone. I would also like to thank the other RSGB adjudicators,Ian G0FCT(2m), Quin G3WRR(4m&23cms) and John G3XDY(6m&SHF)for their efforts during the year.

Pete, G4CLA
