    2nd 1.8 MHz Contest 2008

This contest continues to grow in popularity - with a total of 119 logs received plus 4 checklogs. This represents another small increase of 8% over the previous event in February 2008; however, the majority of the increase is predominantly due to the increase of European competitors. In fact, for this event, there was almost double the quantity of overseas logs submitted for adjudication, compared to the UK.

Most entrants seemed to concur that conditions or activity levels were somewhat down on previous contests. Particularly noticeable was the lack of workable stations from North America appearing in the logs. A few USA stations were active – but one station – WD5R – who was active from Arkansas, managed to work 8 UK stations. European activity levels were boosted by an OE 160m contest that was running alongside the RSGB event.

It was great to receive logs from competitors that were either new to topband, or returning to the band and contesting after a break. In addition, there were 5 ‘small pistols’ running QRP that seemed to enjoy the competition, despite the obvious problems with QRM and QRN.

Comments have been received suggesting that the last hour of the contest was very, very laborious. So much so, that in at least one case, the competitor admitted to dropping off to sleep before the end of the contest!   Separately, a question regarding the lower frequency limitation for this contest has also been raised.  Both items are to be reviewed by the Contest Committee.

In Section A, (UK), with a huge score of 1222, the leader and winner, of the Victor Desmond Trophy is once again Clive Penna, GM3POI. In addition, Clive also retains the Maitland Trophy as he has the highest average score from GM, for both the 1st and 2nd 1.8MHz Contests in 2008.  In 2nd Place, 160 points behind Clive, with a score of 1062 points is a new entrant - Bob Barden MD0CCE operating from the Isle of Man. In third spot, with a score of 1035 points is regular competitor Roger Cooke, G3LDI.

In Section B (Overseas), the leader once again is Paul O’Kane, EI5DI. With a score of 482 points, Paul is 61 points ahead of 2nd placed entrant Dennis Andrews, F5VHY, who scored 421 points. In third place, with 382 points is another regular Topband entrant - Roland Milker, DL2OM.

Once again, I urge you all to check your logs before submitting them. This year, I received one log that had just 16 QSO’s in it – but, unbelievably, all QSO’s apparently occurred at the same time - according to the log!  In addition, I also received a log from a station - right at the end of the submission date deadline - with an attached log from other some European DX contest. Unfortunately, both logs were disqualified.

Congratulations to the worthy winners and thanks to everyone that took part. I hope to see you all in the next contest.

    Graham Bubloz G4FNL

    Checklogs from G3MZV, G3WGV, G3WRR, UA9CLB

    SOAPBOX:

    DK3UZ
RIG Elecraft K2 #2018, 5 watts out + 80m Guywire Pyramid, fed via open-wire line and remote controlled balanced pi coupler

    DK4WF
    10W power

    DL2OM
Much better result with the vertical antenna. The SD contest software worked fine

    EI7CC
    Yaesu FT-990 + Sloper @ 30'

    EI7GY
    IC756PRO + Loop

    F5VHN
I'm just getting going on CW. Thanks to those who slowed down

    F5VHY
    FT1000MP/ACOM1000  + 60ft loaded vertical

    G0ADH
Conditions seemed to be very good - Heard some very big serial numbers quite early on. FT847 + G5RV as T

    G0IBN
IC756pro3 + folded g5rv. Not many G stations searching, alot of europeans

    G0MTN
Low noise on the band, more contacts than last year, and only got 'bumped off' my run freq a few times. Good fun.

    G3GLL
FT1000mp and AL811amp + Inverted L about 55ft high. OK for the first hour or so ! My high local noise level swamps the weaker signals !
    Gave up at 2330

    G3GMM
    TS530S + Long Wire

    G3JJZ
    IC756 PRO III  100watts. ANTENNA - 85' LW

    G3KKP
    TS-870 + 160 FT. END FED, 15FT. AGL

    G3LDI
Great start with a pile-up, but the last hour was so slow I nearly fell asleep! Listening through S-7 of noise is no fun either. That would be S-9 if it was raining. Only one USA station, so propagation not good over the pond. At least I have got my log in on time this contest!

    G3LET
Tentec Orion II + Sloping wire 240 ft. High absorption level meant that DX (at least to the West) was unusually weak and appeared in quite a narrow time window.  Quite a few new G calls heard, but balanced by others missing.  Thanks to all for the QSOs.

    G3LIK
YAESU FT1000MP + VERTICAL GROUND MOUNTED. Some big signals on the band and had a job to get started. Did not hear another
station in PO district. Nice to see some familiar calls in the log. Fell asleep for 3/4 hour towards end of contest

    G3MZV
IC706 + Dipole.  A waste of time unless you have a big linear - why do us low power users even try to compete?  A low power section might encourage the minows.

    G3PDH
Enjoyed the contest as usual despite only a moderate antenna for top band. Would like the Norwich code to be changed as sending NR after the s/n sends some people, particularly foreign stations, into confusion with question marks and resending their number again!

    G3SJJ
K3, Acom 1000, dipole at 57ft, RX coax loop antenna, well I did say I had a new confuser machine fitted with Vista so here are my excuses! Nice clear QRG on 1833.8 Three minutes in and 6 QSOs the log, poof, keying went wild so had to reboot and consequently lost my freq. Settled on 1820.2 and stayed there for the next 1.5 hours, managing 92 Qs in the first hour. Most of those were made sending
all info on the mHam Win Keyer paddles with my right hand and entering data on to the keyboard with my left hand. I usually revert to this method when experiencing logging program problems, it reduces the stress! I had 2 further issues, one of which was my own fault. There is a sleep button on the keyboard just above the Escape key and close to F1. I somehow managed to nudge it! After some S&P I settled on 1827.3 with a further bit of S&P at the end. Some general observations: My Rx coax loop helped on numerous occasions since I have a high n/l from super grid power lines. The K3 held its own very well against strong intra UK activity and the 2nd Rx works very well indeed. There was a higher than normal level of European stations duping me, not sure why. A few of the usual UK participants were notably absent plus no-one in my own postcode or adjacent ones of DE,LN and CV. Nice to hear W5 so early at 2257. All considered, an interesting session!

    G3SWC
    IC756Pro2 + Inverted L

    G3VYI
TS930S + Hmbrew linear +  Marconi. Re-did the ATU and radials, seemed  to help ! Nice  to work  some  W's & lots of EU!
    Condx good at start.

    G3WGV
Just a check log, as I was only on for a short while and wasn't making a serious attempt. Conditions seemed quite good! Nice to hear lots of EU.

    G3WRR
IC7800 + 50ft doublet (ends at 25ft and 5 ft) fed as T as it wouldn't load as a doublet! Just a checklog due to (a) S7 local noise level & (b) poor antenna. Skip seemed pretty long - heard lots of continentals but few locals.

    G3ZGC
IC7700 to 132 ft wire wrapped into 55 ft long garden. Social event meant I could not do the full contest.

    G3ZRJ
KENWOOD TS850S 80W + Doublet max height 30 feet. Good level of activity some very very weak G sigs. Sorry i had to pack up so early
thanks for all your efforts. SD worked beautifully as ever- thanks Paul

    G4AIU
FT-847 + Long wire. Relatively new to Top Band. Found conditions very noisy here in West Somerset. Contest freq limits 1820-1870KHz but heard no one above 1850KHz. Is this normal? SD 14.13 performed very well. Worked EI5DI.

    G4BJM
    Omni6+ 400W + Dipole

    G4BVH
FT950 + TL922 + Dipole at 60' and Inverted L at 70'. First time I have done this contest for many years. Good fun but last hour was
    very slow going.

    G4BXT
Elecraft K3 + Inverted L @ 35 feet. Great to enter this contest after a 25 year break! No contacts with ANYONE in DA or surrounding districts!

    G4DBX
    FT1000MP MK5 field + inverted L

    G4DDL
FT2000 + 30m Longwire. The tree supporting one end of the antenna has died and so has my 160m signal. Good fun but very slow at times. Never did manage to get a decent run going.

    G4EBK
Yaesu FT2000 100w + inv vee dipole ctr 10 Mtrs, bent and wrapped back to fit in garden. Very noisy here, hard going but stuck it out to the end. Heard many examples of deliberate interference to others and twice on my qso's.

    G4FAL
Seemed a bit better than last year. Only thing that was cooked this time was the kebab that I ate before the contest started.

    G4LMW
Low temporary dipole worked well for inter-G. Crowded!

    G4PIQ
A couple of hours of on-off operating with 100W and the world's worst 160m antenna (Inv-L 6m up, 20m out).  I quickly threw down two 20m long additional radials and the match changed significantly so undoubtably most of the power was going to warm up the earthworms. Garden too narrow and short to put in decent radials over  more than about a 30 degree arc but must be able to
improve earth system somewhat. Surprised to actually have a few answers to CQ calls though so not completey dreadful!

    G4RCG
Ten Tec ORION II + DIPOLE AT 60'. Started great then after 90 mins it just tailed off to a trickle. I say this every time this test should finish at 12.00 midnight not 1.00am. SD was flawless as usual - tnx Paul EI5DI (nice to work you as well)

    G4RYV
Icom IC706 Mk1 + Inverted Vee doublet Apex at 22 feet A.G. Enjoyed the contacts made. Second year I have entered. Must try and get more practise at cw reception. Also improve my logging methods to eliminated duplicate and logging errors next time.

    GM3POI
Elecraft K3 + Amp + Vertical + 4SQ + Beverages. Wind 67 MPH with Static rain slowed me down

    GM3YEH
IC751A to dipole at 40 feet.  First 2 hours were busy but from then it was painfully slow.

    GM3ZBE
    FT1000MP + Inverted L at 40ft

    GM4FAM
FT1000mp + 1/2 WAVE DIPOLE @ 70FT . Lotsa activity but very slow last hour and no station worked West of Ireland!

    GM4UBJ
IC7400 + 80 mtr windom. My first foray onto top band for many years.. A few aerial improvements are required but I managed to get one end of the windom up to 50 ft . SD worked fine once again...  See you next time with a better score

    LA4CQ
    Kenwood TS-690S (100 W) + 80m LW

    LY3BA
My last RSGB 160m using LY3BA callsign and worst ever score in this Contest. UK activity is way down comparing with previous years. The first hour was promising, but rest of the contest - just a pain.  Only 1 QSO during entire last hour. Starting from December 18, 2008 I'll stick with my contest callsign LY9A only.

    LY4T
    FT-990, Inv L

    LY5W
    TS-850S , P.A, Delta Loop horizontal

    LZ1GL
TS840S + sloping dipole. I have managed to work all the G stations I have heard only 7 ... The condx were very poor to my side with strong QRN and high noise level.

    M0CEF
With 5 W and 22 m wire not going to reach for the stars. Just some QSOs for fun.

    M0KOP
My first 160m contest. Had a lot of fun especially working stn's who knew me as 2E0KOP!! Thanks for the qso's. Hopefully back for the next one.

    OK1ARO
    FT-840 + LW

    OK1FKD
    QRP-Elecraft K2-5W + LW 42m

    OK1KZ
    Rig-TRX TS430S 100W. SOAPBOX: Ant Dipole G5RV

    OK2BIU
    DX-77  (100W) + T SHAPE, 2x20m. Heavy local QRN

    OM4JD
    ic 746 + inv "V"

    ON3ND
My first qso on top band with modest set up ! Always very pleasant to work the good british operators... Unfortunately I had not the opportunity to be qrv during all the competition.

    ON5JD
    TS2000 + 2x20mtr dipole 15mtr high

    PA0FAW
    TS570D 90W + INDOOR LONGWIRE.
NOT MUCH ACTIVITY, A BIT DISTURBING 2 CONTEST AT THE SAME TIME. STOPPED AFTER
25 Q'S BECAUSE OF LITTLE ACTIVITY AND START OF PSK63-CONTEST.

    PA0FEI
TS530S, 100 W HF, longwire. Splendid activity on Top Band! A great pleasure to participate.

    PA0MIR
As always an enjoyable event but little activity from new stations for the non UK participant in the last hours. Reasonable low dipole for 160 m but no lin amp here and noisy environment.

    PA0TCA
    TS-850 + Sloper for 160 meter

    PI4WLD
A short operation from the clubstation after having worked almost all available stations from the home station.

    RN1ON
TS-570DG + PA + Vertical, Delta Loop. Many thanks to all G-op's for test contacts! Many QRM, but all very nice! See you in next contests!

    RW3AI
    Icom 7800, LW 120m

    SM7EH
    FT1000MP + L-antenna

    SP4GHL
    QRP 5 Watts + LW 120m

    SP9GR
    FT1000MP-MKV + dipole 89mtrs, 10mtrs up

    VE3CUI
FT-980 + Homebrewed 2x813 Kilowatt Linear Amp. + 3-Element Phased Inverted L array. Conditions this year were absolutely AWFUL to the UK from this side! I only heard 3 stations, & of these only 2 were in the test! Remarkable, though, how a very few "G" stations stand head & shoulders far above all others in the UK. I heard absolutely nil otherwise.
