    ADJUDICATOR'S COMMENTS

Many stations reported increased QRM and noise this year.  This is reflected in the unusually high number of errors in the logs. Only two entrants managed a clean sheet, the higher-scoring being G3JJZ

Nigel Cawthorne, G3TXF, remains the leading individual scorer with a log containing only one error.  Martin Platt, G4XUM, operating GD0EMG managed to winkle out a pair of West-Coast Ws via long path but, alas, they count only the same as 'G' and Martin comes in second.  Ian Pritchard, G3WVG, takes the third podium position, as he did in 2007.

There were few comments about the change in team composition from five to four members - those remarks that were made were favourable and this year has seen an increase in the number of both teams and individual stations taking part, compared with last year.

    SOAPBOX:

2E0KOP    Very Busy contest. Great fun. Nice to work a lot of Familiar Calls. See you all on the Club Championships

G0CKV    My first attempt at AFS

G0DVJ    Good conditions. Nice Activity levels. Some deliberate QRM at start

G0EFO    First hour fantastic.  Last hour dire!

G0EYX    Good fun for me after 4 years off CW

G0GFQ    Getting Better, really enjoyed it this year

G0IIQ    CAT (Mix-w) used throughout for Tx and Rx.

G0KYA    Enjoyable contest, but could only do first hour and a half due to family commitments. Everyone seemed well behaved and very courteous! Used 10W and indoor antenna.

G0KYS    Gradually getting the hang of this CW lark.   One day I might even call CQ

G0LHZ    Great fun my best score yet, but still not good enough!

G0MRH    An enjoyable contest with good operators taking part. Conditions also good for the whole time.

G0MTN    Windy.  Good to see the continued support for domestic CW contesting.

G0OKF/P    Enjoyable. Quiet location for a change.

G0RAF    Another good AFS CW event

G0WHO    Seemed better supported than 2007 encouraging

G2AA    A great way of keeping the blood pressure up for the afternoon. SD performed faultlessly as usual which is more than can be said for the operator.Glad the contest is no longer, don't think the bladder could stand any more strain!!

G2HDR    Check log only but I enjoyed the event

G2JL    Fewer "QSL"s  & more "R"s;  an improvement ! SD is fine when you get the hang of it. CU next year,  if we are spared...

G3HEJ    Busy time, & expected wideband  approx 500 kHz, S9 swept noise sounds) arrived around 16.30Z......think 'broadband' noises from neighbours, or their fluorescent lighting ? ...... Also agree with club's 'qrs/ beginner ops' comment ''Several 'qrq ops' above 3560 khz'' ! 'SD' was just great, but i 'locked out' for 10 mins, trying to clear a typing error, until i found the F11 key; that got me back into business again.

G3HKO    Good turnout. Yaesu 847, G5RV,  5 watts,  Good fun.

G3JIR    First entry in AFS CW

G3JRM    poor showing this year very busy band. used mostly s&p with only one short run and an early finish (Grandaughters birthday party)

G3KAF    Dell lap top refused to power up. Resorted to old Toshiba which sends poor CW. Sorry chaps.  I did send serial number twice to make sure. Nevertheless a very enjoyable contest as always.

G3KLH    Conditions very good here but fewer stations than usual

G3KNU    Good conditions for all UK no complaints

    G3KWY    Very fine. No problems

G3LDI    Plenty of key clicks to be found. In this day and age, something that should not be heard. Glad to see some of my Morse class taking part!

G3LET    Conditions were excellent, with low noise level and lots of new calls.

G3LHJ    Good condx, lots of activity good to meet old friends again - enjoyable as always

G3LIK    Slow going at times but nice to see a lot of familiar calls in the log. Always great fun

G3LZQ    With just 100w and probably 40% reaching the antenna was always going to be tough. Decided to use S&P then managed to run for the last couple of hours. Decidedly dodgy auroral for the last hour.

    G3MIR    good activity

G3NKS    Enjoyed it as usual.  Surprised how well my 66ft doublet performed.  Conditions good for inter-G; strong signals from GM even in the first hour.

G3OLB    Had a fight with my computer during the first 2 minutes!

G3PDH    Good contest as usual, slight improvement on last year or are there more taking part?

G3PHO    My first attempt at AFS.Was going well at first but then found I could not get a run going on one frequency and had to resort to Search and Pounce.

G3PSM    Had a rig problem in first hour so wasn't very happy!

    G3RSD    CONDX BETTER THAN EXPECTED

G3SJJ    Everything went really well so the only excuse I can come up with is lack of antenna height as usual. I got one end up to 60ft and the other at about 50ft, but with the centre just at 57ft it is not competitive. Even the jammer who appeared at the end of the first hour didn't worry me. He started by sending a few dashes, then a long string and then something that I presume was a data mode. I had the 250Hz filter in anyway so just moved slightly and got rid of him. He came back later but again no prob. Key clix were noticeable from a couple of stations, one with a very high score and one GM station. Only non EU worked 5B4AGN and a UA9. Inter UK propagation seemed very good. N1MM worked a treat, very smooth, no keying probs or speed changes. Only the occasional c---k up when using the paddle.

G3SVD    My first time in the cw AFS, not being much of a cw operator I stuck to S&P and did about as well as I had  expected. Also  I was using WinTest for the first time and it seemed to work well throughout, once I had got over a  couple of finger trouble glitches in the first few minutes.

G3SWH    One more QSO than last year!

G3TBK    Dreadful start, lots of QRM. It could only get better

G3UJE    Signals not as strong here as last year and the first hour was slow going. Had a cursor problem which caused log corruption after stations called me that I'd worked before.  This resulted in 4 or 5 qso's where the log data has been lost.

G3UKV    Very enjoyable - but increasingly hard to get a full cw team together these days. Many well known callsigns.

G3VIP    Enjoyed contest, best score in AFS.

    G3VYI    CONDX GOOD!!

G3WYW    Inter G propogation was good. Radio and SD worked flawlessly for a change.

G3YEC    Very noisy with QRN for about an hour then conditions were a bit better.  As usual got shifted off my frequency by a station that does not realise the other station is transmitting and you are listening !!

G3YHV    Great contest and good band conditions -  people even seemed to net quite well !

G3YMC    Another fun contest, good conditions, low noise, plenty of activity but at times hard going on QRP....

    G3ZGC    Excellent conditions.

    G3ZHE    Good Fun

G3ZVW    My best effort to date. More activity than last year and not a lot of QRM.

G4ALE    Enjoyable as usual, but hard work of course! Got off to a slow start but the run kept going longer than usual. As last year, the QSOs seemed to come in waves.

    G4ARN/P    great fun

G4BUO    Unfortunately I think I'm the only Cray Valley representative this year and I will miss the SSB event as I will be busy teaching a Full licence course. Hard work with a dipole lower than usual: when it was clear I was slipping behind by CQing, I was able to push the rate back up with some dedicated S+P. This year it was definitely more productive than use of the second VFO while running.

G4BYG    Thoroughly enjoy the contest and found the operating standards very high

G4CJY    Enjoyed test, with dodgy radio

G4CKH    ENJOYED VERY MUCH WITH PLENTY OF ACTIVITY.

G4CZB    Used the trusty Corsair again but this has to be the last time - no longer has the excellent strong signal handling it had when new.  Apologies to all for the requests for repeats.

G4DDL    Started late but still had lots of fun. MU0FAL was heavily jammed when I worked him just above 3560. made it anyway due to his skill! I wish people would turn SCP off; get fed up with being called G4DBL!!!

G4DDX    conditions seemed very good to me particularly to GM land. Can't decide if due to new earth mat under the lawn or band conditions. Best score so far and getting used to calling CQ instead of S&P.

G4DQP    Seemed rather hectic with one or two trying to be super speed merchants. A laid back approach made it rather enjoyable. SD logging makes it so easy compared to paper logging.

    G4DYC    ENJOYED NOISE FREE CONTEST

G4EBK    Enjoyable contest again. Cdnx went down at 1620Z but not as bad as expected.

G4EIX    First cw contest for ages so was a bit rusty.

G4EOF    Long lost relatives arrive at 14.01, oh well I guess I am the B team this year!

    G4FBS    Enjoyable as usual.

    G4FCH    Enjoyed the contest
Enjoyed contest.good to hear some new callsigns on this year - m3's etc

G4FKA    Another one bites the dust! Nice to work all the usual suspects.

G4FNL    Activity seemed a little down on previous years. I enjoyed the contest. I was using a newly installed full-wave horizontal loop for the 1st time. Not sure that it was too successful!

G4FON    A good contest and my mew FT2000D worked well.  Conditions seemed excellent with strong UK signals and a sprinkling of DX as well. The downside was lots and lots of key clicks all over the  band this time.

G4HSO    Very enjoyable. I am enjoying the learning curve. Four stations per club is a good move.

G4IYC    Good to hear so many stations on 80m

G4KLF    Condx good , some deliberate jamming in last half hour the jammers were very strong  and persistent.  Otherwise the conditions were good

G4MEM    Very enjoyable, conditions into UK good - some very strong signals

G4OGB    SD worked better than me!

G4POF    Less QRM and noise than last year

G4RCD    Very enjoyable though it seemed like a struggle all the way through.  Hard to keep a run frequency with 100W and no good long runs.  Overall result is slightly up on last year I hope!  SD + Winkey worked flawlessly.

G4RCG    Had a great time conditions were good and the band was reasonably quiet for a change. Not much in the way of dx apart from 5B4AGN calling in.

G4TSH    Where was everybody? very few EU on, but propagation was there as I worked LY,YL and 9A very early on.  Only 2 DL's in the log! Band sounded very quiet with weak stations easily copied most of the time. No flying start with only 44 QSO's in first 30mins. Used Win-test for first time in this event which took a bit of getting used to. For some reason you have to press the space bar to move between callsign and serial fields. Try not to take these events too seriously as not really got much hope of winning from this QTH.  Thanks to Nigel G0VDZ for use of his garden and shed again. Did the whole contest in wellies!  the garden being waterlogged as usual at this time of year.  Had to strip down the amp 30 mins before the start as antenna change over relay started sticking during tests.  Had some problems with the CW sending getting slurred to begin with, traced it to RF getting in along the networking cable to the PC.  Easily cured by  disconnecting it as networking not needed. Would like to enter the "one hand tied behind back" category as pains in left arm, shoulder and neck from injury sustained meant that I found it most comfortable to stick arm behind back and sit on hand!

G4WGE    When changing to a new logging program, it is generally a better idea to learn how to use it before the contest!

G4WKH    First entry in AFS CW

G7PVZ    Had massive problems with RF getting into keyer and PC. Had a major headache trying to rectify it. In the end alcohol won!! Will try again for SSB AFS. Tnx to the two I worked.

G7TWC    Very enjoyable first outing in AFS CW

G7VJR    First AFS CW entry, very enjoyable!

G7VRK    Not my best mode  but was  fun if only for the last hour or so

    G8MIA    Band conditions were excellent

GD0EMG    Had the option of a vertical as well as the dipole this year. The vertical played well for EU and gave me some contacts i wouldn't have worked on the usual dipole. Best score from GD for the CW leg, but i'm sure someone has still pipped me!

GM0EGI    Missed first hour due to other commitments

GM0ELP    Good condx throughout, good GM contingent. G3s most prevalent. Got dark at 15:45. Thanks for working me.

GM3JKS    Unexpected technical problems at start lost me valuable time/QSOs

    GM3POI    Seemed low on activity

    GM3WIJ    Enjoyable

GM3WUX    We could run this event an hour later for the benefit of us GM's.

GM4BKV    Enjoyed it, a little overawed by number of contestants. Seem to land up with same calls regularly

GM4OBD    The hardware and software worked perfectly. It's the operator that needs upgrading!! Band conditions were good. 98% of the stations came back first call with my callsign correct.

GM4SID    I enjoyed this contest again.

GM4ZUK    Band seemed busier earlier then normal. Last hour was more difficult to find new stations.

GW3PRL    Enjoyed contest.good to hear some new callsigns on this year - M3's etc

GW8IZR    Another enjoyable AFS - WX precluded the use of a high dipole so opted for  dipole at 40 feet and a vertical. N1MM flawless in ESM, only problems here related to the operator. Thanks all for QSO's and particularly the fills.

M0BPQ    Interesting contest. Good start but faded badly to miss my personal target of 200 (147 last year). Also managed to demonstrate contesting to a bunch of local scouts and their licenced leaders. It didn't help my rate, but some are now coming to a foundation class, so it was worth while!

M0CGE    Token effort to help team member numbers. A bit rusty after a break from contests.  Lots of noise on band.

M0CNP    Computer problems caused a late start. Nonetheless a most enjoyable start to the HF contesting season and looking forward now to the SSB section

M0DHO    A lively and anoyable contest. Some weak stations were hard to copy in the QRM. Funniest moment was working EI5DI and seeing the comment in SD about getting extra points for that contact!

M0MUZ    two power cuts es QRM

M0PTO    Straight key thru whole contest.

M0TIF    sadly its getting faster each year and more pc not keys

M3OSP    Conditions very noisy. SD a fine tool in the right hands. I generally manage to get it wrong. Could do better

    M3WCK    Enjoyed contest

M5ALG    A small entry from me as the antenna mast kept lowering itself automatically!!!!!!
