    1st 1.8 MHz Contest 2010

The 2010 1st 1.8Mhz contest attracted 111 entrants, almost a 50/50 split between overseas and UK participants. Conditions were favourable though less profitable for northern UK stations. GW3YDX managed to work XU7ACY -  the only UK station to do so. GU4YOX was the most frequent UK station appearing in US logs. On the whole though DX was lacking for this event.

This event coincided with the PACC 160M contest which increased the number of PA participants. This did lead to some confusion since PA stations only sent their district codes and no serial numbers! Entrants are reminded that the rules for RSGB contests is to log exactly what you receive. If no serial is sent then enter either a hyphen or '000' and leave a note in the Soapbox comments. The contest adjudicator is not the same as the log submission robot so is able to make reasoned decisions.

Once again, the majority of logs were received by the RSGB HF Contest Committee Robot entry system, greatly simplifying the adjudication process and allowing a faster turn around of results.

An interesting turn of results with GW3YDX taking top place in the UK section. Having dominated this series of 160m contests for a few years GM3POI suffered poor conditions and slipped to 4th place. The top four scores were very close and the 2nd 1.8Mhz contest has the potential for being an exciting event. Ron Stone wins the Somerset Trophy for the leading UK score.

In Section B (Overseas), the winner is F/G4BJM closely followed by EI5DI.

Thanks to all who took part, and I look forward to seeing you for the 2nd RSGB 1.8Mhz contest on 20th November 2010.

    Mark G4MEM

    Good Contest!

    F/G4BJM
Good fun.  Better than last year but still slow, only one valid QSO in the last hour.  Rig TS870, 500W, inverted Vee.

    G3GLL
Band conditions quite good. Inter G activity seemed rather low ! Gave up early !

    G3GMM
    TS520S + loaded doublet

    G3LDI
Noise level only S-8 this time so not too bad. Only one USA station workable

    G3LET
Rather poor and noisy conditions. N America in particular were weaker than usual. One only JA copied one letter at a time. Thanks to the adjudicators and to all who called.

    G3LIK
Some reasonable conditions for inter G working. Nice to hear a lot of familiar calls on the band. Managed a few from Europe but no real DX

    G3OLB
Activity from G-Land not as high as expected.

    G3PDH
Its a good job all those Eu continental and Russian stations were on otherwise it would have all been over by 10pm!

    G3PSM
First time in this contest for a number of years and the number of G stations seem to be down. 100W to a long wire antenna running NE/SW which from this location heads right out into the Atlantic.

    G3RFH
Had antenna matching problems just after the start and had to reduce power to about 80watts. Conditions seemed pretty good but not many G stations about. Very slow for the last hour. Think most people went to bed at midnight!!

    G3RSD
Due to poor antenna only came on to give away points

    G3TBK
Ft1000mp 400 watts to inverted"l" at 70 feet. high qrn levels in last hour when new stations hard to find. Most stations worked were outside uk.

    G3UFY
    RIG - FT1000MP + Ranger 811. ANTENNAS - Loop

    G3VYI
Good condx at start lack of G's later. Lots of PA's and weak Eu with my antenna. Netting and tuning hard work !!  807 driving QY4-400 linear/RA17 Rx !!

    G3ZGC/A
Rig IC775DSP 200w to dipole up 50 ft at G3LLK QTH. Conditions seemed quite good. A pleasure to operate from a noise free environment unlike home where I would have got about 40 QSOs only.

    G3ZRJ
Glad to give out some points

    G4AFS
Great fun some very loud signals and high QRM for the first half and gradually got quieter and more serene as time went on.

    G4ASR
Some stns missing the first dot/dash of their exchange. Pleased to work J38XX first call.

    G4CKH
Enjoyable couple of hours on the key.

    G4DBW
    Elecraft K3 10 watts output

    G4EBK
Usual perfomance again from my 100w and inv vee dipole bent to fit garden. Centre at 30Ft and a average height of 18 Ft. No dx worked but pleased to get 13 countries in the log.

    G4FAL
Logging software was changing N into 9 so I had to log all the PA stations as serial 000 with the area code in the district field.

    G4FNL
Condx seemed poor. No JAs worked and only a few Ws. NP4A was an outstanding signal. Thanks to everyone for the QSOs

    G4HHJ
FT847 + Loaded inverted-L for 3.5MHz at 9m agl. My first time in this contest - trying new ant and CW practice. I only got about 1 hr of operating in total.

    Ft1000mp 100w + inverted l.

    G4PIQ
K2/100 + PA 400W Inv-V top @ 11m ends at head height. Low antenna was lousy for DX with NP4A only QSO outside of Europe but good
    fun.

    G4RCG
Very noisy to start with but still managed 100 in 1st hour 50 in the 2nd hour still think that this test could be shortened to 3 hrs. Sd worked great as normal

    Rig: ft857; antenna: lw 40m

    OK2BFN
    IC746 100W Inv. L ant.

    OK2BMU
This contest is either too long to work 42 QSO's in 4 hours or too small amount of GB stations is active. Thanks to all for QSO but I am not sure taking a part in the next time.

    OK2BTT
Trx icom 737a. aerial lw 83 m 15m up the ground. fine contest

    PA0MIR
Always pleasant to enter this contest, at the same time working for the PACC. Would be fine if the organizer accepted just the 2-letter code from PACC; I now sent both serial and NH province code in each exchange. For overseas the amount of statio
ns to be worked is unfortunately quite limited so the 4 hour format might be shortened to the 80 m club format of 90 minutes

    RA4HBS

The agony & the ecstacy: hearing all of the very FB sigs from G-land hours ahead of my local sunset & being unable to work them because of the vaguaries of 160-meter propagation! I worked 10 stations in total but you should really see "...The ones that got away"! Hi
