Results - AFS SSB 2011 - Individual + Team Listings.

This is always a hard-fought contest -- as one entrant put it: "Quart into pint pot .. comes to mind". There is never enough space for everyone who wants to use the band. Still, some newcomers tried it out, and one or two said they would come back next year. Those whose 80m contesting experience was limited to evening contests were agreeably surprised that inter-UK conditions were generally good throughout.

The best-equipped stations, with a high dipole and a linear, generally get high scores, but operating skill is equally important. Being able to run at over 100 QSOs an hour is no good if you can't make out the replies in the QRM. And using logging software to its best advantage, with instant callsign checking and a band-map, is also valuable when tuning the band using "Search and Pounce".

Some new affiliated societies entered this year, perhaps as a result of their experiences in the 80m CC events, and we hope to see them again soon. Thanks to everyone for entering.

Ed Taylor, GW3SQX, AFS SSB 2011 adjudicator.

    SOAPBOX:

    2E0WAW
Inefficient antenna and a struggle with 50 watts!

    2E0YOR
Very congested but great fun for my first contest

    F8VON
Many strong signals and lots of QRM!

    G0AAA
    400w to dipole at 60ft

    G0AJJ
Good level of activity. Tnx to all for the points.

    G0ALE
Don't much care for the SSB event - QRM appalling! But things picked up when I finally got a run frequency 35 minutes before the end!

    G0BWC/A
Many stations did not recognise /A in my callsign

    G0CTO
    90w from Flex5000 into doublet

    G0DHZ
First entry in AFS for many years.

    G0DVJ
Good activity... some nice long skip in the last 90 mins. Some deliberate tuning QRM but not a big problem to notch out.

    G0DWV
    Great contest, really enjoyable....

    G0EYO
    Good conditions

    G0EYR
    SD worked well

    G0FPU
Had a great time. Good conditions

    G0FYX
    Good condx. Nice and busy.

    G0GDU
FT1000+LIN with 350W into W3DZZ @ 29ft agl; logging with NIMM. S&P for 1st hour - mostly running thereafter - last hour slow with long skip

    G0GRI
    Hard going

    G0ICJ
plenty of activity hampered by local noise level @ S9

    G0MTN
No good running freq found = disappointment.

    G0OKF
Conditions pretty good for my site.

    G0RDH
A good contest with better operating conditions than the RSGB CC contest on Wednesday night. It was good to hear so many GM station operating. I missed them on the RSGB CC SSB contest on Wednesday

    G0RXA
I'd set out with the target of achieving 100 QSO's and improving on my last year's score and manage to succeed. My station is not a powerful one so I am pleased that was able to achieve my goal using the search & pounce technique alone. There were some big stations out there but it was good to hear some of the smaller stations come through later on.

    G0VJG
Great fun and good team effort station set up from scratch. Shame there were a few idiots on band making chicken sounds ?? but managed to carry on

    G1MIE
Hated every minute of it using a vertical is rubbish in this contest! I say it every year but definitely my last AFS SSB!

    G2AA
Great fun good conditions some very strong stations, Nice to get my Linear going. How about limiting the power limit to 100 watts ? Considering there are many more participants than bandwidth.

    G3IZD
Very high activity as ever, with 100W and bad antenna -- impossible to hold a run frequency so reduced to S&P but one or two runs up and down -- a few new stations to work

    G3JJZ
RIG - ic756 pro III, ANTENNAS - 85' lw. Strange condx: G's started strong then all faded down and back up again later. Need to sharpen my elbows for next year - I may get and hold a run freq then!!

    G3LDI
Glad that's over! DQRMers out in force from DL and also the SSTV

    G3LHJ
The loudest & Widest wins - what a struggle with a small station - I guess we say that every year

    G3LIK
Some good conditions at the start but a lot of stations spreading too much. Very slow in the last hour. Did my logging by paper and pen due to interference to the PC

    G3LLK
A very late start due to commitments.

    G3MZV
Superb conditions but 100 Watts just isn't competitive.

    G3NKS
    Could only spare an hour.

    G3NPF
Usual AFS QRM. I do not enjoy this contest at all.

    G3OLB
You have to be a sadist to take part in this! TS850 + FL2100Z + dipole at 60'

    G3SJJ
The only thing I changed for this contest was my psychological approach and that I chose a good frequency for once!

    G3SNU
Some massive signals out there - could not hold a call freq for very long.

    G3TBK
Antenna snapped at T-Piece just before Contest- had to lower tower to repair. Back up just in time - but not at usual height because of high winds. Thought I had a "good" frequency at start but at 1400 someone opened up just above with very wide signal. Deliberate to clear a freq? Later his signal was clean. Very noisy throughout both QRM & QRN. Propagation was constantly changing. Most GMs were weak but some very strong Italians near the end.

    G3TLI
Some very big signals and band very busy. Good conditions

    G3UFY

RIG - FT1000MP + Ranger 811H amp. ANTENNAS - Dipole up 35ft. Band noise S8 - S9 so S & P only today. No point in running if you can't hear your callers!

    G3VIP
RIG IC7000 40W - 40M LW - Homebrew logger. Some wide signals big struggle with 40 watts.

    G3VMY
Reading and District ARC B team

    G3VPW
As always so difficult to find a run frequency between the big signals. Never-the-less was quite good fun and pleased with my totals can't believe there were 350 or so stations active as evident from some high scores heard !

    G3VYE
Usual heavy QRM but good fun - enjoyed it.

    G3VYI
Good condx to GM later Some deliberate EU QRM shame on them. Most ops very patient !!

    G3XSV
HA stations were sending BD as their exchange.

    G3XYF
Many old hands using "Roger" instead of "Over"

    G3YLA
    Flex 3000 N1MM W5GI antenna

    G3ZBU
Very good condx. I enjoyed it this time ;-)

    G3ZGC
Rig IC7700 200w to 132 ft wire wrapped into 55 ft long garden. Was doing ok until the PC stopped dupe checking so I gave up.

    G4ASR
Power outage wiped out last 1.5 hours!

    G4BSC

Icom 756 pro iii. 80m zepp

    G4BUO
Temporary location at the Scout hall used for CVRS training courses. Got a dipole up at 58ft and the first half of the contest went well. but then it tailed off adjacent channel QRM really hit the rate and I ended way down the pack. Need to find a different QTH for next year!

    G4CUS
Band crowded as usual. slower than previous years!

    G4DDX
What a difference the time makes. I worked 54 qso's SP in the first 1/2 hr. I managed a few runs but could not hold the frequency for long. Got very hectic at the end

    G4DYC
    Used SD post-contest

    G4EBK
S&P for the first 2.5hrs then found a spot for running well crawling actually. Hi. Very difficult to hold a spot with 100w got squashed many times with the higher power stations getting way too close making it difficult to hear replies.

    G4FKA
    Mayhem!

    G4HSO
Many here at Verulam ARC believe that AFS SSB has become too successful for its own good. Perhaps it is time to move to a 'sprint' style to free up some opportunities for run vs S&P without having to hold a frequency well before and throughout the contest? I for one got bored after an hour of S&P and went QRT. Notwithstanding many thanks to the committee.

    G4IUF
Really enjoyed this years good condx lots on.

    G4KNO
Shame not to break through 200 Q's. Need to get the antenna higher! 100W to inverted vee windom centre at 30ft.

    G4LRP
Only on for the last two hours.. Great Fun!!! Very big signals about.

    G4LWB
Enjoyable contest maybe a dipole antenna next time

    G4PIQ
Only had 1 hour available rather than the 5 necessary to put in a decent score but had fun and rather regretted my time was limited. Did one quick sweep of the band but not in fully aggressive mode and then took a 5 min break and called CQ for 33 mins. So 55 mins operating time. Maybe I'll be back in anger next year - but not with the K2 - it's not good enough on SSB! K2/100 + PA. 400W. Dipole @ 70ft.

    G4RCD
Trio TS-930S at 100 Watts Output. Dipole fed with open-wire feeder at 40 feet max. This contest was great fun but it is always tough with 100 watts in AFS.

    G4RLS
Some very good conditions though I was unable to take advantage of them because of thirty over nine qrm from local Plasma and PLT racket. Good turnout for a Saturday afternoon!

    G4SJX
A great contest especially as I found the source of my S9 noise just 10 Minutes before the start. Was a home goal as proved to be a cctv camera psu!

    G4YTV
Quart into pint pot or words to that effect come to mind. A very noisy afternoon but enjoyable none the less.

    G6GVI
40W from IC735 into end-fed wire strung around garden. Testing custom Excel spreadsheet to generate Cabrillo.

    G6NHU
Very difficult with just a long wire but I enjoyed it.

    G7DDN
Just s&p as had other things to do this afternoon. As one Scottish station put it, "Nowhere to run nowhere to hide"(!)

    G7HNG
    Faulty Clock!!!

    G7TWC
Personal best. Loved this year. Flex3000.

    G7VRK
SHAME THE CONTEST CLASHED WITH THE UK DX RTTY. Late start, started S&P. Worked the strong stations then it was very hard work trying to find weaker stations. Managed a run for last hour which helped the score. Please try and not have 2 uk contests together.

    G8AFN
First attempt at AFS great enjoyment. SD worked well throughout which is better than me

    G8ALR
Lot of big signals this year. Continentals came in at the end. Good manners prevailed! Nice... SD was the usual pain to use but was good for checking for Duplicate contacts...

    G8ATO
    wall to wall QSO's

    G8DTF
    5W Only

    G8ZRE
I was entering Hungary contest but had to wait until 1400 RSGB start time as rules for both contests state start serial at 001. Please would RSGBCC consider allowing start of serial anywhere as all that is required is that receiving station records correct detail. It should not matter what is sent as long as a serial number is not used twice.

    GI4AAM
Great contest. Worked HADX as well.

    GM0ELP
Elecraft K3 80m doublet @10m. Very short skip at start with GMs only Was QRT for approx 45mins due to antenna problems. No dx this year. Thanks to all who worked me.

    GM3YEH
    IC75A 90W dipole at 25 feet.

    GM4OBD
Very tough going from here with 100 W.

    GM4ZUK
Band full - very difficult to find clear QRG. Better score than last year though.

    GW0GEI
New qth and ic7400 100w to low dipole this year - so four hours of S and P practice for me on ssb as any running was unproductive.

    GW7BZR
I think I'll start texting. Could do better than 100 watts!!!

    M0CNP
Very engaging contest and fascinating to listen to the skip distance changing throughout. Thanks everyone for the points

    M0CZR
    Noisy band. Gud contest

    M0DHO
Usual battle with QRM making weaker stations difficult to copy. Excellent filtering in K3 and voice keyer made this more enjoyable contest.

    M0GHZ
Not accustomed to HF contests! Very noisy and busy.

    M0JEK
This was my first RSGB AFS contest. It was great fun and I enjoyed it. I did have a sore throat so it was a bit of a struggle, and I hadn't had sorted out my voice keyer so there was no respite or a chance to RUN instead of just S&P. I will be back for more though, I am sure.

    M0MCV
Enjoyable contest. Good inter-G followed by some good contacts into Europe. Pleased with 150 Qs in the first hour and to break the 300 barrier.

    M0MMI
Very enjoyable contest on a very crowded band.

    M0NNH
Great contest was active for an hour or so !!!! Lots of QRM

    M0SAR
1st 50 QSOs were easy - the next 50 difficult!

    M0XDF
Much good fun - some QSB propagation got longer later and good to work GW & GM. Working local got harder of course.

    M0XDX
Could only do 2 hours, very busy but fun.

    M0ZIF
50 mins and bad swine flu

    MW0RZC
Started 30 mins late, unable to get shack door open -- very noisy band, much qsb and qrn

    MM0GPZ
Inv L 400w. Conditions only really improved for me in the last 45 minutes. Every QSO was a struggle. Will be back next year hoping for better :-)
