1st 50MHz Contest 2007

Some decent sporadic-E towards the end of the event made this contest a little more interesting for some, but not all, entrants this year. I was pleased to see entry levels up from last time, and more QSOs in the bag for most entrants, too.

The top of the Open section was a one-horse race, with Trev Harris G2KF/P putting in an error-free log to beat G3ZVW (Steve G3ZVW and Mike G7TWC) who are runners-up again this year. In the Single-Op Fixed section, Bryn G4DEZ reclaimed the top slot from Keith G4ODA who came in second.

Those winners and runners-up get certificates. Other awards go to Richard G4HGI (leading 25w/single antenna entry), Fred 2E0TLB (leading Intermediate entry) and Bob M3RCV (leading Foundation entry).

Thanks to everyone who sent electronic logs (only 1 on paper this year) and I hope those who used the online entry facility found it useful. I received lots of comments on the conditions and activity levels which are reproduced below.

Comments from the logs:
G0EHV/P:
First 50 MHz contest tried. Conditions a bit heavy going at first, Es at end was welcome!
G0VHF/P:
Useful test of modified wirelesses
G2KF/P:
Good start, up and down QSB, many thanks to all.
G3NFC/P:
A little DX at end
G7OOD:
Good conditions on the bands for our location
GM4VVX:
Warm and overcast. sp.E on 10 mtr but not reaching 6 mtrs except for 6 to 7 seconds. Not much activity to be heard. Very few heard from from G land. Only one heard but not worked. Used this short contest to try to get others in club to try an entry in a contest.
GW4EVX/P:
Light rain at start of contest. Conditions average with brief dx openings.
M0BAO/P:
Some DX heard at the end of the contest lots of activity from the UK
M1MBZ/P:
Conditions fair, some QSB on more distant stations. Weather good for portable operation. MX0BCQ/P: Rain, heavy at times causing poor troposcatter condx. One Spe contact livened things up. A Spe opening shortly after the contest finished.
G3FIJ:
Lots of QSB. Sporadic E welcome after mid day.
G3MEH:
Good activity plus a little Es in the last half hour made for an enjoyable contest.
G4DEZ:
Interesting with a little DX at the end
G4HGI:
Hard going really - but nice to have a bit of DX at the end!
G4JZS:
Couldn't do last half hour when all the fun started. Activity seemed good for the first hour then waned.
G4ODA:
Good activity but only one Sp E contact
G8ZRE:
Fair start and good to work IT9SPB for DX
M3RCV:
Only had an hour. Reasonable level of activity.
M5BFL:
Good UK activity, then some nice unexpected DX towards the end. Made for some good distances for the final score.
M5BXB:
Some nice E's and Tropo.Very enjoyable but should have done better!
