144MHz Trophy 2007

This event coincided with a major enhancement in conditions to Spain and South West France. In total there were 192 QSOs over 1000 kms and one entrant broke the 100 squares worked barrier. Conditions to the East were rated as average, though many QSOs were made into central and eastern Germany. Although the contact numbers have increased from 2006, many entrants commented on the lack of activity from the UK. The number of entries for this contest continue to rise with 54 received this year. Logging standards continue to improve but a number of entrants continue to claim locators which bear no relationship to the prefix of the station worked and fail to log /P calls correctly.

While the weather was kind to stations in the south, stations in the north experienced varying amounts of rain and wind. Various minor equipment problems were reported but no-one suffered from any major failures this year.

This contest attracted a number of bad signal reports against a number of entrants. Investigations by the RSGB CC have resulted in two stations receiving warning letters. To allow full investigations to take place it is essential that the contest committee receive detailed reports. Readers are asked to refer to the write up in the Sports Radio Column in the November 2007 issue of Radio Communication.

Congratulations go to:

  • The Parallel Lines, G8P, who repeated their open section win in 2006 to retain the Mitchell-Milling Trophy.
  • G0KPW, this time operated by Richard G4WFR, who won the single operator (fixed) section and retains the Thorogood Trophy.
  • The Warrington Contest Group, G3CKR/P, operated by Mike G0CDA for winning the single operator (others) section again.
  • The Reigate Amateur transmitting Society, M2F, who won the six-hour (others) section again.
  • Keith, G4ODA, who won the six-hour single operator fixed section.

These stations together with those marked * will receive certificates.

A check log from G6CSY is acknowledged.

Comments from the logs^M ^M
EA2BFM/P
^M ^M
Nice tropo condition to the north, some UK stations worked here with^M strong signals. Running 200w in a homemade 16el yagi by dj9bv design^M (4.4wl). Thanks for beam to the south, so EA is QRV in 144 !!^M
G0FBB
Poor activity from G, generally hard work.
G0HVQ
Nice tropo down south into EA on the first day and ON/PA signals up but hard going at times due to a lack of activity from the UK.
G0JLF/P
Co-sited with Bristol CG HFSSB station. Sticking T/R relay in the transverter meant I almost gave up after 20 minutes in. Glad I didn't! Thankfully an open type so I could clean the contacts. Good to work EA a few times and generally good n/s. Poor to the East any further than PA/ON, no DL worked even though worked b4 the contest. UK activity seemed higher than recent events. Single op. Enjoyable break from the HF noise......
G0KPW
Nice to get on 2m from east coast again. Good sigs from EA but average condx to east.
G0VHF/P
1 hour lost at start through reported audio system problem. Then the PTT line went O/C! Subsequently struggled to catch up.
G1KHX
Quite good. Enjoyable Sunday morning.
G2KF/P
Good start then poor. Many thanks to all.
G2T
Great to work so many locators but site was compromised with too much blocking in most directions.
G2XV/P
Open to south Sat, flat otherwise, poor to east. No dawn lift at all. Bad interference at start of contest, some very strong signals about. A well attended club weekend. Several new operators had a go and really enjoyed the event especially our new M3's. Low UK activity. Thank you very much for running the contest. Each year is so different and brings a different set of problems to overcome that one can never grow tired of this challenge. This year was a great club weekend. I have already started on next years plans.
G3CKR/P
Good conditions to EA(14 > 1000KM), F(13>1000KM),not so good to east. 5 1/2 hrs sleep, hard going but fun! 13 DXCC 86 squares TKX to all.
G3LVP
Conditions to EA good on Saturday. On Sunday afternoon whilst /M on the M5 locally heard GM3ZUK/P. However very few UK stations appeared to be active even during the Backpackers session. Fewer `G's' worked than in the 4M Trophy event under `flat' conditions, maybe stations in the S.E. never beam this way, very disappointing., more than 6 hrs. would be unimaginable from this QTH. Only one novice station worked and no M3's. It cannot be a good idea to hold this contest & HF SSB Field Day on the same weekend.
G3MEH
Nice to work into northern Spain and south west France as well as Orkney. My enjoyment of this contest was spoiled by several stations whose signals spread over too much of the band. It seems to be a regular problem with this contest. It's about time some of the regulars in this one cleaned up their act, in my opinion. There's really no excuse for over-driven linears, mal-adjusted speech processors etc. Next year I might be tempted to dust off my spectrum analyser and come up with some figures to present to the worst offenders over air, suitably logged. Judging by the remarks on the claimed scores web page I wasn't the only one who suffered.
G3NFC/P
Heavy splatter from 1 station. Lower part of band unusable.
G3RHH
Very good to the south
G3VER/P
Our first time in this contest and we will be back! Great fun. I guess we could all do with making sure our signals are cleaner. Our first time in this one and we will be back. Really great fun - we just need a BIGGER linear and MORE BIGGER antennas!!. Could do with more UK activity and some cleaner signals. Many thanks to the committee as always.
G3VQO/P
Fancied a Saturday afternoon stroll, so I took the rig with me.
G3XKT/P
Good Tropo to Northern Spain. Only operating for 90 minutes.
G3YDY
Some good DX to The South. This contest seems to have produced its usual crop of poor signals again.
G3YJR
Some tropo on Sat and backpackers on Sun. Definitely worth a go :-)
G4APJ
Slightly above average, certainly some pleasing DX around considering the weather outside MY window!
G4DEZ
Activity very low in UK. Conditions varied but nice to work a few EAs. Managed 13 countries so not all bad news.
G4HHJ
Operation was limited to about 30mins in the morning, and to the last hour of the contest, due to family commitments, but it was good fun, nonetheless.
G4JZS
Some truly shocking signals about. Action required.
G4ODA
Good activity but high level local QRN
G4XPE
Plenty of activity and good conditions with a little QSB.
G5RS/P
Conditions a bit above average. Some sigs were very wide.
G5UM/P
Great fun, late start, new site. Great to use jack G5UM's call close to his old QTH. Good logging practice for our newer ops.
G6TGO
Did not see any significant tropo conditions.
G6UBM
Shame I didn't have more time available
G8CQA/P
Fair, some DX. Got lots of splatter.
G8HGN
Some nice DX to EA & F despite the QRM!!
G8P
Excellent conditions, warm calm WX, great weekend! Please arrange same for next year. 101 squares worked. We had a couple of equipment failures so lost some time on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Apologies to G5UM/P, the first failure happened during our QSO! Otherwise everything went well.
G8T
Some good tropo towards Spain and southern France. Activity seemed lower than usual, especially from G. Only decided to do the contest on the Tuesday night - did well considering relatively small station, new wireless (I really need to make a lead for the parrot - hard work doing all CQ calls vocally) and only two operators...
G8ZRE/P
Main entry in Backpackers, Fair EU DX but weather rain not a good summer
GM0AYR/P
Only managed to operate for the last 2 hours due to wind rain and low cloud. Conditions were average, but activity level was good.
GM4DIJ
Conditions variable. Only able to operate occasionally
G3CKR/P S9+20 at times
GM4ZUK/P
Nice tropo to EA but not too good to PA/DL. UK activity must be an all time low - what can be done to reverse this trend?
M0BRA
Was everyone doing SSB FD?
M0MAD
Nice conditions but lots of QRM & splatter made the going difficult at times. As always CW gets through when SSB can't. Shame more stations won't or can't use the key. We are almost disappointed to report that there were no technical problems this time!
M2F
Excellent to SW but surprisingly poor East. Must move to East coast!
M5BFL
Nice opening to northern EA. Band very busy, with a few stations splattering, this could do with having a purge as many smaller stations not getting a fair chance to operate.
M8C
Tropo forecast optimistic. A long 24 hours!
MM0GPZ/P
Enjoyed contest from this new QTH only 20 feet ASL, right on the Solway Firth coast. I find myself travelling further south all the time to try to compete. MU0GSY A short contest for me. Better results than previous contests. Hope to be longer QRV next time !
