432MHz AFS 2007

"Best AFS for many years" was the comment from one regular entrant. Other phrases such as "Good fun" and "Pleasant surprise" confirm that this was indeed a great contest. Entrants were greeted with good propagation conditions, with five stations managing QSOs over 1000km. Stations on the East Coast in particular were able to work well into Germany, some as far as Berlin.

Chesham and District Amateur Radio Society made it two wins in a row, topping the AFS table by a clear margin. Harwell Amateur Radio Society A Team took second place, improving on last year's third place.

South Birmingham Radio Society, G8OHM, beat last year's winner Dave Gilligan, operating as G1OGY/P, into second place in a close contest at the top of the Open section.

The Single Operator Fixed section was won by Bryn Lewellyn, G4DEZ, with Roger Piper, G3MEH, in second place.

The following stations also receive certificates:

  • James Beatwell, 2E1GUA, was leading Intermediate licensee
  • Bill McGill, M3LFQ, was leading Foundation licensee
  • Frank Laanen, PE1EWR, was leading Overseas station
  • Ian Fay, G1HLT, was the leading SF station running 25W or less into a single antenna

Finally, I am pleased to announce that the committee have accepted a generous offer from John Hall G0ODQ to donate a trophy for future 432MHz AFS contests. The G0ODQ Trophy will be awarded to the winning club/society starting in 2008.

Comments
2E1GUA
It was good fun, but the ant failed to rotate. Thanks to all that worked me.
G0ADH
Lost 2 hours with antenna problems.
G0KYS/P
Conditions seemed good. At one point PE1EWR was the loudest station on the band for me - and my best DX at 506km!
G0LGS/P
Good, band open, some good DX
G0MTN
Good conditions meant this was fun. Worked more than I did last year with 400w and yagi @ 20 metres !?!
G0VFM
Good Conditions, Worked many German Stations, including Berlin.
G1HLT
Decent level of activity for a 70 cm contest. Conditions average for first 90 minutes. Enforced break to fix rotator control unit. Then much better during the last 2 hours.
G1OGY/P
Tried to do too much in insufficent time, again! Conditions good with good band occupancy.
G3FIJ
Very good. high pressure
G3MEH
What a pleasant surprise to get a reasonable opening well into Germany. It was great to be able to work DL Winter Field Day QRP portables as well as a number of other Germans. Was 20mins late starting so probably missed the best of the opening.
G3NFC/P
sunny and calm 1c
G3NNG
Good
G3XDY
Some good DX around but activity could be better.
G4APJ
Nice to hear so much activity. Shame that the alleged DX wasn't audible in the NW!
G4DEZ
Surprising to find the band slightly open!
G6GVI/P
Suberb day - warm sunshine and no breeze. Good signals with low power!
G8OHM
Best AFS for many years. Four hours seems too short for a multi-operator club station.
G8ZRE
Fair on 20watts had to wait for ice to melt on aerial and dry out to bring SWR down.
PE1EWR
The activity seemed reasonable with some QSB but nice paths to IO80 and IO93. Didn't hear the JO40/60's though, which were worked by some G's.
