70MHz Trophy 2007

This years 70MHz Trophy Contest saw a slight overall rise in entries on 2006, with the Fixed Station, Single Operator category growing from strength to strength. No Sporadic E propagation was reported this year, therefore most entrants' best DX came from either GM or GJ.

In the Open section, only the Lothians RS returned to their usual QTH in South West Scotland. There was no entry from last years winners, The Five Bells CG, and The Kintyre Window Cleaners CG G(J)3TCU/P popped up in Jersey, providing many entrants with their best DX, and a new country to boot.

Congratulations to The Kintyre Window Cleaners CG, GJ3TCU/P, who retake the VHF Managers Trophy for their top placing, with The Northern Lights CG, GD0EMG finishing in second place.

In the Single Operator Fixed Section, Bryn, G4DEZ, regains first place after a one year gap. Despite having an almost identical QSO and multiplier total, Roger, G3MEH finished in second place due to a lower points per QSO average. Again, congratulations to both entrants.

The clear winner in the Single Operator Other Section was Erik, M0SDA/P, operating on behalf of the Warrington CG (Green Caravan Reserve Team). As overall top placed single operator, Erik also takes the Four Metre Cup. Runner-up in this section was Dave, G0AOD, operating on behalf of Burton ARC as G3NFC/P.

M5ADF, is awarded a certificate as the highest placed station in his section using 25W or less and a single antenna. Congratulations are due to all certificate winners.

John MacLean, MM0CCC

Comments from the logs:
G0PQF/P
Conditions seemed quite poor with deep QSB. WX was even worse. Despite all this was pleased to be called by GJ3TCU/P (my 1st GJ on 4m)
G0UPU
Deep QSB on some stations.
G0VHF/P
After the good conditions during the Saturday set up things just had to be poor for the contest. So it goes.
G1KHX
Deep qsb + 2 hour lunch break no options !
GM3HAM/P
Conditions were quite good at times, No Es or autora, some MS Could not get onto the usual site, ended up on lower site with S5 QRN. Had problems with the genny, rain in the 230V voltage meter. Didn't hear any GI or EI stations, expected to work some on FM/AM. We were called by I5MXX but no qso! (probably MS?)
G3MEH
Poor to average conditions with deep QSB on longer paths. Several new calls in the log but a number of regulars missing..
G3NFC/P
Contest to long for stations on band. Wet then dry then wind and wet to finish,.
G3RHH
Average conditions. Gave up at lunchtime!
GJ3TCU/P
We thought conditions were on the poor side of average, not surprising with the disturbed weather system. Activity seemed to be a bit down on last year. Perhaps we got a poor impression because we were down to one antenna. A mysterious fault (which disappeared after the test) caused us to remove the splitter and the 2nd 6 ele. It also caused us to start late. We were lucky that it was dry all week-end but there was a considerable wind speed. We heard no Es but were pleased to work GM4AFF (with quite a struggle). We called on FM several times but did not hear one FM signal. The GJ call seemed to be in much demand; for the first hour or so we had a mini pile-up at every QRZ and a remarkable 17 stns gave us serial 001! We all enjoyed the event and we were making QSOs right up to 15:00.
G3VQO
Always a dilemma - whether to go /P onto a hill with my 1/4 wave whip and work both stations I can hear, or stay at home with my 3-element, vertically polarised, yagi, fixed pointing ESE (intended for cluster access). This time the weather decided it! Worked my two stations within the first hour, then - nothing! With activity levels like this there is no incentive to improve either the home or portable set-ups. I wish I could say it was fun ...
GM4AFF
Lots of loud stations around who can't hear! Called quite a few and got nowhere. Seems like the general noise level in G is worse than it ever was. Good fun though. Very pleased to work GJ3TCU/P!
G4AFJ
Usual poor conditions! Not enough time for me to work everyone I heard but I did have a problem with the rotator not working.
G4DEZ
No DX and activity very low for a Trophy still too long for the activity.
GM4DIJ
Average conditions, but low band noise for a change.
G4OBK
Average to good.
GW4RWR
Antenna pole freewheeled round in the wind, settling each time on North. Good for GM but apologies to everyone else...homebrew QSB.
G6GVI/P
Cold and drizzly before lunch, then dry and breezy afterwards. Activity dropped off markedly after 1pm.
M0BPQ/P
Came up for an hour to give points away.
M0SDA/P
WX very wet Sat night, sunny all day Sunday.
M5ADF
Quiet start. Local noise level rose. Very noisy last 2 hours.
