March 144/432 MHz 2007

Once again the first major event of the contest season posed a challenge for portable stations. This year the contest coincided with a major storm with gales, driving rain and electrical storms. Away from the radio, several fatalities occurred due to the weather. Be careful guys, it can be dangerous out there.

Entrants rated the conditions from terrible to extremely poor with heavy QSB and rain static. Both entry levels and QSO numbers were well down on 2006.

Few equipment problems were reported. One group lost their 432MHz receiver due to an electrical storm and had to be towed off their site when the trailer tower sank into the mud.

Congratulations go to:

  • The Colchester Contest Group G0VHF/P who won the open section for the second year running.
  • Bryn, G4DEZ who won the single operator fixed section for the fourth year;
  • Dave, G0AOD operating as G3NFC/P for winning the single operator others section.
  • John, G3XDY and David, G4JZS as joint winners of the six-hour single operator fixed section;
  • The Moors Contest Group M9T for enduring terrible weather for the second year running to win the six-hour open section.

All other band winners and runners up who together with stations marked (*) will receive certificates.

Roger Dixon, G4BVY

Comments from the logs:
G0JLF/P
A few bursts of continental activity, slow into the UK. Conditions poor. Only 3.5 hours on air.
G0MTN
144 MHz: Bit of fun on a Sunday. 432 MHz: Felt sorry for the guys in the rain.
G3MEH
144 MHz: Poor conditions with deep QSB on longer distance paths. Poorly supported but maybe this contest's omission from the March RadCom Contest Calendar contributed to that. Still, looking on the bright side, at least with low activity there weren't too many co-channel problems. Bad rain static at times on Saturday afternoon. 432MHz: Poor conditions. Most QSO's arranged on 144MHz. Omission of this contest from March RadCom contest calendar probably didn't help as many of those who kindly come up to give points away rely on it.
G3NFC/P
144 MHz: Bad QSB like a door swinging open and closed 432MHz: Heavy QSB little activity
G3UUT
Average
G3XDY
432 MHz: Under 3 hours search & pounce operation. Not many G's heard and some of those seemed to have RX problems.
G3YDY
Generally poor but DX was workable with big German stations as can be seen from the DX worked. Most of it calling me. Proving the point that it is not necessary to have a large station to work the DX. Just good ears and be prepared to work at it.
G3YJR
144 MHz: Nice to have the eclipse of the moon to watch through the skylight. Condx not good, but some useful bits of DX. 432 MHz: God bless Scotland! :-)
G4APJ
Don't really know, there weren't enough stations audible to tell!
G4DEZ
144 MHz: Extremely poor conditions but a couple of DX contacts 432 MHz: Extremely poor conditions and no DX !
G4HHJ
144 MHz: Very little UK activity. Intermittent operation through the 24 hrs. 432 MHz: Sorry it's only one contact on this band - I need an antenna !
G4JZS
Very quiet, had to check that feeder was still connected. Thank heavens for Region 1 activity.
G4XPE
1444 MHz: A waste of time! Worked all I could hear in first couple of hours and only one reply to my CQ calls. 432 MHz: I have no beam for 70 cms so no further comments.
G5B
144 MHz: As 70 cms - notable QSB 432 MHz: Average to poor with deep QSB. Great hospitality & a fresh pub with excellent food & real ale for the Friday night "get together". All kit worked well - QSOs down on last year. More comment soon on the web site.
G8ZRE
144 MHz: ON4WY could be heard for whole of 6 hours where were the other stations, 432 MHz: Terrible conditions
M0BAO/P
Very quiet contest, very bad WX on Sunday MoMAD 144 MHz: Mad Jack's ARS first contest. The field was so wet that the vehicles including the trailer tower sank axle deep in the mud and had to be pulled out by a Landrover and tractor. Mud glorious mud! Conditions generally average. 432 MHz: RX zapped by electrical storm on Saturday. Apologies to all who called us who we couldn't hear
M1CRO/P
432 MHz: Late again!
M5BFL
144 MHz: Wish I'd only entered the 6 hour section. At least I got to watch the paint dry! 432 MHz Think everyone was either doing ARRL Test, or had ants down due to WX!
M5C
144 MHz: Damp! With Sunny damp. A bit windy at times with eclipse.
M9T
144MHz: WX worst I've ever seen on Dartmoor; Gale force winds and driving rain. Conditions flat, with low UK activity. Yagis at 45 deg after mast wind damage. 432 MHz: WX appalling - gale force winds and driving rain. Conditions poor. Rotator failed to hold antennas in a useful direction, so effectively ruined our 70cms operation!
