A QUICK SURVEY FROM THE RSGB VHF CONTEST COMMITTEE (by Andy G4PIQ, Chair, RSGB VHF Contest Committee)

Many of you will be aware that a team composed of members of the VHFCC, CSC and other volunteers have been looking at how to build the fairest possible scoring system for the whole country in the monthly UK Activity Contests. We've now reached the point where we have a number of alternative proposals which we're studying in real detail, and we have some decisions to make.

We have identified some scoring systems which we think are the most even-handed ones to the whole country, but the only logging software that we're certain will score them accurately is MINOS. We then have some other scoring systems which we think are a bit less even-handed across the whole country, but which can be scored correctly within both MINOS and N1MM+ (we believe these are the two most common loggers in use).

Now, not having the score calculated correctly during the contest doesn't stop you taking part, it just means you won't know your multiplier or bonus score accurately during the contest. After the contest, when you submit your log to the contest entry web pages, our entry system will re-calculate those multipliers or bonuses correctly. You can then use this score to populate the Claimed Score system if you like. However, knowing your correct score during the contest could help you optimise your strategy as you go along.

We'd like to know how important having an accurate scoring in your logging software (primarily N1MM+) is to you, compared to having the fairest possible scoring system. Remember, if you use MINOS you will have accurate scoring in any system which we propose.

We’ve put a very short survey up at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/QJY5CRG and would really appreciate your feedback.

We’ll use the information from this survey to help us focus our efforts on the proposals which are most likely to be acceptable to you. You can expect a detailed consultation exercise on this subject, and wider VHF rule issues, towards the end of the month. The consultation period will run through the period occupied by the RSGB Convention - an event which will provide an opportunity for further discussion.

This mini-survey will be open until 16th September, but please provide feedback as soon as you can.
